In this sermon given at the SS Gospel Centre, Petaling Jaya, on 21 March 2021, I discussed whether the baptism in the Holy Spirit is an event that (1) is simultaneous with conversion or new birth (John Stott and Richard Gaffin), or (2) is distinct and subsequent to the new birth, accompanied by the initial physical sign of speaking in tongues (Pentecostals and Charismatics), or (3 ) follows a fixed pattern that is universal and normative for all believers?
For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.
1 Cor. 12:13
And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. (2 Cor. 1:21-22)
Never have I heard or read such good reasoning or explanation on baptism of the Holy Spirit, based on the findings in Dr Ng’s preaching. The exceptional experiences by the Samaritan and Cornelius are something to ponder. Conclusion is excellent.
Thank you, Dr. Ng. Absolutely agree with your position.
Great and clear exposition. Some foundational points may be explained from a different perspective or angle:
1) the book of Acts is essentially a historical record of the early church and your hermeneutical tool to interpret will lead to an understanding different from KW which I fully agree with the historical explanation of the various different manifestation of the Samaritans, Cornelius, Ephesians or even the Ethiopian eunuch. God is not bound to act by historical precedents , so it is hard to justify norms from these chapters
2) the semantics of baptism, filling, signs, and manifestation of the HS must be clearly explained as was done by KW
Appears so simple but the topic created so much havoc in the past and even so today and the day to come.
KW, multiple your tribe
